What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a procedure used to remove unwanted hair. The laser targets melanin (pigment) within the hair follicle causing thermal destruction of the hair.

The art and science of looking younger and feeling your very best is now possible using state of the art laser equipment. Advances in laser technology allow for safe and effective laser treatments for all skin types. The Cutera Xeo Laser utilizes the 1064nm hand piece which allows for deep penetration to effectively ablate hair follicles even in patients with dark complexions. The Cutera ProWave 770 allows rapid treatment of large areas such as legs and back. The flexibility of having both systems allows us to treat all types of excessive hair problems.

How many treatments are needed?

A series of eight treatments is recommended. The treatments are done once a month. The laser works best when there is a contrast of light skin to dark hair color. However, dramatic improvements can also be seen with dark skin types.

How does laser hair removal feel?

The sensation on the skin varies in intensity according to the density and coarseness of the hair. Typically the sensation is similar to an elastic band snapping the skin. Some people may choose to use a topical anesthetic to numb the skin prior to treatment.

What areas can be treated?

Laser hair removal can be used on any area of the face and body. The most commonly treated areas include the upper lip, underarm, back, chest and bikini.

What are the side effects of laser hair removal?

Most of the side effects of laser hair removal are temporary. They include: redness, swelling, blistering, scabbing and dyschromia. Although rare, there is a slight possibility for long term scarring due to excessive heating of the skin.

Does the hair have to be grown out prior to treatment?

The hair follicle needs to be intact in order for the laser to effectively treat the hair.

How does vein therapy work?

Our laser system is a non-invasive light therapy specifically designed to eliminate undesired veins. It delivers pulses of light energy which causes the blood within the vein to coagulate which eventually destroys the vessel and later gets reabsorbed into the body.

What types of veins can be treated?

We can remove unsightly veins from all parts of the body. Small facial veins ("telangiectasia") can be treated quickly without any bruising or complications. Spider veins and larger blue veins can also be treated with excellent results. Patients with dark, light or tanned skin can experience outstanding results. Blood blisters (or "hemangiomas") and port wine stains respond very well to our vein therapy.

How many treatments do I need?

Patients find that one or three treatments are sufficient. However, the number of treatments necessary depends on the number, color and size of the vessels being treated.

Do the treatments hurt?

Many patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered to the vessel. No local anesthesia or pain medications are required but some patients opt to use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment.

What happens after the treatment?

Following your treatment, some redness or bruising may occur. When larger veins are treated, a tan or brown pigment may persist for a few weeks or months. Patients who have leg vein treatments may be advised to wear support stockings for a brief period of time.

What are the possible side effects?

Many patients report few, if any side effects. The most common are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These side effects usually last for 24 hours or less. Some patients may experience some bruising and in rare instances, blistering may occur.

When will I see results?

Most patients find the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within 2 to 6 weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months. It is possible for new veins to appear which can be treated in the same fashion. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun.
